The Port of Long Beach has the second-busiest seaport in the U.S. (after the Port of Los Angeles), which means that it’s one of the main arteries that connects L.A. to the rest of the world. And the city itself is has a history of importing/exporting things that are distinctly Los Angeles, from Art Deco architecture to Snoop Dogg and the rest of the “213” crew.

Each year, the residents and businesses in Long Beach throw away approximately 368,000 tons of residential, commercial, and industrial waste. That’s 1,494 pounds for each man, woman, and child in Long Beach.

Long Beach Incinerates Most of Its Trash

In Long Beach, most trash is taken to the Southeast Resource Recovery Center (SERRF) to be incinerated and converted to electricity. The residue from this process is taken to landfills to be used as road base. The remainder of our trash was taken to Puente Hills Landfill in Whittier, but is now closed. Actual percentages are disputed but Long Beach as a major port is a big generator of waste.
